The ongoing drought in Isiolo County

Several families in Isiolo County have been negatively impacted by the current drought, yet roughly 900 households in Isiolo Central can grin. This is because of a project that the County Government of Isiolo, in collaboration with the Northern Rangeland Trust (Leparua Conservancy), is supporting through the use of carbon credits.

To preserve the environment, increase accessibility in local communities, protect rangelands, and reduce soil erosion, the households from three clusters—Kampi Turkana-Elsa, Leparua, and Kilimani—participate in this initiative.

During the first phase, a representative from each household will be paid Ksh. 600 per day for two days to carry out some of the aforementioned tasks, according to John Legei, vice chairman of the Leparua Conservancy. They will be able to feed their families by using the proceeds from these proceedings.

Elizabeth Ekiru, a resident of the Kampi Turkana-Elsa cluster, was ecstatic to receive her ksh. 1,200 after helping to clear a local road of trees and build gully gabions to prevent gully erosion along the road that connects Isiolo town and Kampi Turkana.

"I'm overjoyed because tonight I'll be able to buy food for my kids after going two days without food and skipping school," Ekiru remarked.

Given how far away Leparua was from Isiolo town, the locals decided to remove some bush in order to build a shortcut.

A villager named Peter Kibaki said, "Aside from collecting money from this project, we will have a shortcut connecting us to Isiolo Town as we have been having a lot of struggle going for necessary services in Isiolo town.

However, the project's beneficiaries urged NRT and the County Government of Isiolo to extend it so they could continue receiving financial assistance, particularly at this difficult time when the nation is severely affected by drought.

Most people go without food for days on end, but with just Ksh 600 for today, at least one family will be able to purchase charcoal, sugar, and tea leaves. Kilimani cluster member Adan Mohammed remarked
